Sears Street COGBF "LOVE IN ACTION" Written by: Bobbie Jordan
Senior Supper 2018 was an awesome event. It's very hard to imagine that the Senior Supper has existed for twenty-two years. After the Lord spoke to me to host a Senior Banquet, I had no idea as to how many hearts it would touch or what it would mean to so many.
The Senior Supper was scheduled for March 9th at six thirty in the evening. The guest arrived one-by-one with beautiful smiles on their faces. I was at the door to greet them with hugs and kisses, some came in the door with their hands extending for that special hug.
The program opened with prayer, followed by a heartfelt welcome. I told the awaiting crowd how much I loved them and how they have made each birthday uniquely special. Although I am fifty-eight years old now, I have no desire to stop with this event. The Senior Supper means so much to me as well as the seniors.
As I mingled throughout the crowd of seniors talking to various ones following the welcome, a distinguished little old lady sitting at a table in her wheelchair took me by the hand and said, "you know we plan for this event all year". Then, she looked at me
and said you changed the date this year, I explained that the date was altered because of a previous church event.
The aroma of the delicacies of food filled the banquet room as the guests feasted on Roast Beef, Fried Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Corn Casserole, Mustard and Collard Greens, Seasoned Green Beans, Deviled Eggs, Rice and Gravy, Cornbread, Biscuits, and a variety of savory pastries including Potato Pies, Pecan Pies, Custard Pies, Pineapple Cake, Chocolate Cake, Butternut Cake, refreshing the meal with Water, Tea, Lemonade, and Punch to drink. The professional waiters and waitresses of Sears Street COGBF graciously served the awaiting seniors with grace and dignity. The food was prepared by Sherman Hall, Willacoochee, GA.
Although, there were many who were unable to attend because of sickness, the sick and shut-in were prayed for by Pastor Walker. Ruling Elder Turner and my Assistant Pastor are very supportive of me year-after-year along with their wives and my church family.
Deacon Willie Haynes, age 76, was the oldest male in attendance, and Mother Thelma London, age 92, was the oldest female in attendance. Each of these attendeeswere presented plaques with words describing how precious they were. You would definitely have to meet these people to know how truly special and blessed they truly are. Deacon Haynes is still working every day, and Mother London lives alone, and is very independent. She doesn't drive a car, but says that "pat and turner" (her feet) gets her where she needs to go. Often times, we offer her rides, but most times she refuses them.
I am a firm believer that any elderly person needs to do what he or she can, as long as it is not destructive to themselves or others. Mother London doesn't wait for anyone to carry her where she needs
to go, too many times she tells me when I call that she has already been to Harvey's, Walmart or some other store which can be a mile or so from her house.
Mayor Sammy Newsome, and Pastor Vera Freedman were honored guests, and both were presented with a special gift. Those who had attended for all twenty-two years and for the first time were also honored.
Nothing causes me to feel so blessed than to serve the elderly". I love them dearly and words cannot characterize how I feel. Will the Senior Supper continue for another twenty-two years, we do not know, but there is one thing that is current, Sears Street Love in Action Ministries will do their best to show love and honor the elderly throughout the years to come. If every church would catch the vision and give their elderly one special day each year, it would mean so much. Let's keep this in mind as we reason from day to day, keep walking up saying, "Good Morning" it will be your day tomorrow.
